BORN IN GENOA
RAISED BY THE
SEA
Blending visionary innovation and resourceful design.
SINCE
1979
ABOUT US
When roots steer course and destination.
Our story begins in Genoa, the same city that gave birth to some of the most famous navigators in history. Explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Giacomo Doria, names that contributed to redefining the known world.
Genoa is our port, the starting point from which we look beyond horizon with genuine curiosity, striving to discover what lies ahead, what our next adventure will be. The Mediterranean is our sea. It has united people and gifted us with the precious wealth of diversity. A singular mix of cultures, values and flavours that constantly inspires us and teaches us to be welcoming, curious, creative.
These are our roots and they have set our course for the future. Every day, we challenge the status quo to create something unique, something distinctive, combining visionary innovation with sophisticated and conscious design.
BEYOND HORIZON
In these 45 years, we have covered many nautical miles, always alongside those sailors who have redefined the limits of their sports.
We have experienced thrilling glides, important achievements and unforgettable adventures. A story marked by innovative designs and products tailored to sailors' specific needs when competing in the most prestigious events, including the Olympics, the America’s Cup and Round-The-World Races, but also for their day-to-day life.
TIMELINE
On 19th December 1979, SLAM is founded by sailors, for sailors. The first garment produced is the Mickey Bear, a jacket made using Thermal fleece, a cutting-edge material for its time. And the first victories also begin to arrive with two bronze medals at the Moscow and Los Angeles Olympics, won by Gorla and Peraboni in the Star class. 1985 also sees the birth of the Slam Classic, a jacket designed for the sea that landed in the city.
READ MORE...The first lines of High Seas oilskins and the Stormy Gear System, a jacket-overalls-vest combination, come into being and are immediately put to the test against the ocean waves aboard Pierre Fehlmann's Maxi Merit in the two editions of the Whitbread race, the round-the-world crew trip. 1991 marks our partnership with the Yacht Club de Monaco and the founding of the historic PrimoCup.In 1992 we open our first two SLAM Shops: in Porto Venere (La Spezia, Italy) and Cowes(Isle of Wight, UK), the home of international yachting.
READ MORE...Years of research and innovation contribute to defining the SLAM product portfolio with the creation of the Mistral, the first technical sailing shoe with non-slip grip, the women's line, the junior capsule and even the first wetsuits. Even then, we believe wholeheartedly in the innovation and sailing spectacle of the acrobatic Australian 18' skiffs, the ancestors of the Olympic 49er.
READ MORE...At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, we celebrate 20 years of collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation with gold and silver medals for Alessandra Sensini (Mistral sailing board) and Luca Devoti (Finn single). In 2002, SLAM garments are selected for the Umpires of the LouisVuitton Cup in Auckland for their innovative fabric featuring UV protection. During these same years, we also climb aboard the 60’ Tiscali joining the unforgettable Simone Bianchetti, who claims third place in the AroundAlone, the solo round-the-world race including stopovers.
READ MORE...A long and fruitful partnership kicks off with the most successful sailor of his generation, Olympic gold medallist, America’s Cup winner, Russell Coutts. Together we engineer the innovative and high-performance technical line that bears his initials. In 2007 we land in the America's Cup aboard the colourful Shosoloza for the first African challenge with one of the evet’s most ethnically diverse crews. At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, once again alongside the Italian Sailing Federation, two more medals arrive with Alessandra Sensini's silver and Diego Romero's bronze in the Laser class.
READ MORE...We produce the first oilskin on the market, made of a three-layer elastic fabric, supplied to the BMW Oracle Racing Team crew as they claim the Auld Mug at the 33rd America's Cup! At the same time, SLAM takes its first steps in its pursuit of a sustainable future by supporting explorer and navigator Mike Horn who, onboard Pangea, travels the seas to monitor the state of the planet.
READ MORE...A partnership with Franck Cammas, who won the Volvo Ocean Race (the round-the-world race) aboard Groupama, drives the development of our 'Off Shore' technical line. At the 2012 London Olympics, we kit out the emerging champions of the Australian and New Zealand Sailing Federation, including Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL). This period also sees the global outset of foil mania with the first Moths. Our commitment to the new generation of sailors continues to intensify throughout these years with continued support of the Italian Optimist Class, a true training ground for national sailing, in which education of the sea and sailing take centre stage.
READ MORE...SLAM celebrates its 40th anniversary. For the occasion, we conceive 'I AMGENOVA': a vast photographic project that captures the faces of Genoa (1332 faces), carried out by renowned photographer Settimio Benedusi. A collective event that engaged both citizens and institutions over the course of a week. The year is one of multiple anniversaries, with SLAM partnering up with the momentous 50th edition of the historic Barcolana in Trieste, the world's largest regatta. For this particular event, we produce “Down there on the right”, a documentary that describes the history of the Barcolana, tracing it back to the genuine and profound spirit that inspired it.
READ MORE...In July 2021, SLAMis acquired by the Italian holding company VAM Investments. Enrico Chieffi, a sailing champion and successful manager becomes CEO, charting the company's new course. The current SLAM logo comes into being: are interpretation of the historic 1979 brand name, accentuating its dynamic character with slanted lettering. We partner up once again with the Italian Sailing Federation for the four-year Olympic preparations through 2021-2024. We climb aboard EmiratesTeam New Zealand for the 37th America's Cup as official technical apparel supplier. The Tita-Banti crew, gold medallists at Tokyo 2021, become SLAM Ambassadors. The call of the Ocean returns with the human stories of sailing experiences involving the Slam Squad: the teams participating in the Transat Jacques Vabre.
READ MORE...An important year with highlights including partnerships with Emirates Team New Zealand for the America's Cup, the Italian Sailing Federation for the Olympics and the Nacra 17 crew Tita-Banti. We strengthen our commitment even further to promoting sailing sports among younger generations by supporting the Italian RS21 class in the under-23 project, the Foiling Week, Fraglia Vela Riva and the MAXI 100' ARCA SGR. Our ambassadors now include Italian ocean sailor Alberto Riva and French skippers Sebastien Simon, Arnaud Boissieres, Erwan Le Draoulec and Luke Berry, Alexia Barrier's The FamousProject, and the all-female crew featuring hallmark names, such as Dee Caffariand Marie Tabarly.

COMMITMENT
Every wave is a lesson to be learned, every breeze a source of inspiration, every challenge an adventure.
We are committed to training the next generation through sailing.
Sailing is an extraordinary sport. It requires concentration, excellent communication skills and the ability to solve complex problems. In return, benefits to be gained are many: sailing strengthens our self-confidence, it makes us more brave and more resourceful, it can even make us fly. All core elements that make a difference not just onboard, but in everyday life. Elements that are all the more essential in an age in which insecurities, the fear of the others’ judgement, and difficulties in communication and social relations are growing challenges, especially for younger generations. We believe that sailing is a unique opportunity to address and overcome these obstacles, promoting personal development and positive social interaction. This is why, through sailing, we strive to be a source of inspiration for the next generation as they embark on the unpredictable journey of life. Our aspiration is to instill within them the confidence and autonomy needed to conquer the waves of independence. We encourage them to set sail from their comfort zone and always aim for beyond the horizon, to have fun and redefine themselves through each and every adventure that awaits them. All so that they may sail more consciously into their own future, playing with the winds and embracing their responsibility to protect our waters and the planet. Together we can make a difference. As a sailing brand, we feel it is our duty to do our best and support organisations and initiatives that share our goals.
MAKING
THE
DIFFERENCE
DROP BY DROP
We often hear that actions aimed at sustainability are like drops in the ocean, meaning they have little to no effect. We could not disagree more. Just as the ocean is itself made up of drops of water, all big changes are made possible by the sum of small actions.
OUR ACTIONS
Taking responsibility for the garments we produce is no longer a choice, it is a duty. We take this challenge seriously, knowing we are only at the beginning of our journey.
As a technical sailing brand, our first goal is tocreate products that uphold their performance and technical qualities for along time, because durability is the first ingredient of sustainability. On the production side, our actions depend to a large extent on innovations using the materials and technologies at our disposal. This means that we need to make conscious decisions in selecting suppliers who meet meticulous standards in their production process and with regards to their workers. When designing products, we need to conceive of effective solutions that implement eco-design principles using recycled raw materials while also thinking about facilitating post-use recycling. 32% of out clothing collection is made from natural fibres and the remaining 68% from synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester.
ORGANIC COTTON
RECYCLED POLYESTER
Organic Cotton
Recycled Polyester
Using cotton sourced from organic crops
90% of our t-shirts, polo shirts and sweatshirts are made using cotton sourced from organic crops that reduce environmental impact and the need for energy resources. Organic cotton is grown using environmentally friendly methods while organic production systems are used to fertilise the soil, thus eliminating the use of harmful pesticides and chemical fertilisers that remain in the environment and in fibres that even after washing still pollute water sources. The use of organic cotton also reduces the risk of allergies and skin reactions.
Fabrics from recycled raw materials
68% of our technical collection is made primarily of recycled polyester.
Recycling means saving raw materials, energy and water while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Today, it is possible to obtain state-of-the-art textile fibres using both production waste and post consumer waste. A complex chemical and mechanical process is used to transform plastic bottles, fishing nets and industrial production waste into polyester flakes, which are then melted into granules and extruded into yarn. Research has shown that the production of fibres from post-consumer recycled waste requires 75% less water and 47% less energy. It also produces 55% fewer emissions than fibres produced from the original petroleum-based raw material.
SLAM
TEAM
SLAM has always sailed alongside those who aim beyond the horizon and redefine their own limits.
Each athlete and partner in our family shares more than just a passion for the sea; they share a commitment to excellence, innovation, and authenticity. Together, we have experienced and will continue to experience thrilling adventures among the spray and wind. Sea and sport tales, written amidst the waves, that inspire our dreams, hold our breath, excite us and sadden us, sometimes. All shaped by a single and extraordinary element: the sea. Beautiful yet capricious, making each cruise unpredictable and therefore unique.
